Penn State Berks hosts Berks County Interscholastic Math Competition

In November 2024, Penn State Berks hosted the Berks County Interscholastic Math Competition, a decades-old tradition for the county that had been on hiatus since the pandemic.

WYOMISSING, Pa. — In November 2024, ten Berks County High Schools competed in the Berks County Interscholastic Mathematics Championship hosted at Penn State Berks. This event, sponsored by the Higher Education Council of Berks County (Albright College, Alvernia University, Kutztown University, Penn State Berks, and Reading Area Community College), has been held for more than 30 years but had been on hiatus since the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Teams of three junior/senior students competed on a written exam and as individuals on a separate exam comprised of challenging mathematics concepts and applications. Lunch was shared among all competitors, coaches, and Penn State Berks student leaders, faculty and staff. Prizes were awarded at a later date based on team performance, individual performance, and overall champion as listed below.

  • First Place Individual – Wyomissing High School
  • Second Place Individual – Kutztown High School
  • Third Place Individual (TIE) – Kutztown High School            
  • Third Place Individual (TIE) – Wilson High School
  • Fifth Place Individual – Schuylkill Valley High School
  • First Place Team – Wilson High School
  • Second Place Team – Wyomissing High School

Jeane Serrian, lecturer in mathematics at Penn State Berks, and Jonah Smith, assistant teaching professor in mathematics at Penn State Berks, served as Berks County Interscholastic Mathematics Championship co-coordinators.

The overall 2024 Berks County Interscholastic Mathematics Championship winner, Wilson High School, will be the holder of the traveling trophy bearing the names of past champions dating back to 1991 until next year’s competition to be held at Albright College.
